Do you use your Flames of War-based figures for other, non-FoW rulesets?

* I only use my FoW troops for FoW
* I use my FoW troops for FoW and other rulesets
* I use my FoW troops only for non-FoW rulesets

For purposes of this poll, FoW variants are considered part of FoW (i.e., Great War, Team Yankee, 'Nam, etc.).

I use my FoW troops only for non-FoW rulesets. Right now for Gear Krieg (DP9). Also looking at World at War and Victory Decision, both by AD Publishing.

Check out Jagdpanzer 2nd Ed rule set. Put out by Jeff Gullion and Trent Berg. Two Hour Wargames Big Battles Rule Set. Supposedly they are coming out with a rewritten editionsoon. Fast Play Rules by the makers of Tractics.

The Nigerian Lead Minister06 Oct 2023 3:17 p.m. PST

I use them everywhere, especially once I stopped playing FOW after the new edition nuked the player base.

I use my FoW troops only for non-FoW rulesets. Using them for Combat HQ.

Please clarify if you are using FoW basing, or just FoW figures on non-FoW basing. Thanks! grin

I game FOW Ver3.0 rules and with 20mm miniatures. Never painted 15mm WW2 so I guess I don't use their scale miniatures. But the basing system is used, just on slightly larger infantry bases to account for the 20mm miniatures. And when Ver4.0 came out, the local FOW gaming groups faded away, except for us die-hards using Ver3.0 since it was published (2011?).

William Warner06 Oct 2023 4:30 p.m. PST

I only use FOW figures for other rules and base them for Crossfire.

myxemail06 Oct 2023 6:51 p.m. PST

I consider FoW figures as just another source of 15mm WW II figures. I have a lot of them. With that being said, I have never played FoW, and my 15mm WW II figures are based for other rule systems, and are not based according to the FoW rules

I've used the occasional FoW vehicle, but never played the game.

Col Piron07 Oct 2023 1:17 a.m. PST

I now rebase my FOW figures for Chain of Command , PBI and Crossfire . I'm like a lot of others gave up on FOW when V4 came out .

Decebalus07 Oct 2023 1:29 a.m. PST

I use my Fow miniatures on official bases only for non-Fow rules. I play mostly Spearhead and Crossfire.

Never played the game but I use the figures and vehicles for Battleground rules.

Like many here I use FOW figures but NOT based for FOW. I use them primarily for Rapid Fire and dont play FOW. As myxemail says I consider them just another source of 15mm figures (and vehicles).

Shardik07 Oct 2023 3:23 p.m. PST

I've started using my FOW based troops for Blitzkrieg Commander.

VonBlucher08 Oct 2023 8:21 a.m. PST

I use FOW figures for Battlegroup. I didn't need to rebase them, but I did anyway. Never returning to FOW as the new soft plastic figures are brutal. I'm only using their hard plastic and metal figures.

Ryan Rabies08 Oct 2023 11:03 a.m. PST

I just use FOW metal figures, mostly, as another source of 15mm figures and base them for Crossfire. I really like some of their miniatures, but something about the rule set never appealed to me.

Achtung Minen08 Oct 2023 6:06 p.m. PST

I have never played FoW but I've used their figures since about 2004. I really like the old Evan Allen sculpts. I originally used them on FOW basing for IABSM 2nd Edition back when that came out, with 1 model = 2 men, because I found the base style appealing. Nowadays I use them with CD basing (playing CD3).

Col Piron10 Oct 2023 4:03 a.m. PST

So it seems alot use FOW figures for other games , something the fanbois on BF's FB group say doesn't happen much . laugh

VonBlucher11 Oct 2023 6:19 p.m. PST

Col Piron, I would say over a thousand exFow 15mm gamers, converted to play Battlegroup since V4 came out. Based on a recent pole on the rules Facebook page 50% of the respondents play Battlegroup with 15mm.
Interesting is that 20mm was the primary scale being played with the rules 4 years ago. 20mm is now second with 29%.
I wonder how many players walked away from FOW when V4 came out.

Then there's the other WW2 games people have moved to .

I am literally designing and publishing a system to fill this gap if you're interested in play testing

This one. With the caveat FoW bases have to be acceptable for the ruleset. I am not rebasing.

TBH its a lot easier to rebase with the old flat bases , than the new ones with holes in .

True, but over the years I've come to realize that a good looking base often makes a standard figure paintjob look much better than it actually is. I spend some real time making the bases look pretty. It would be a real pain to get the figures off without damaging them after the putty/sand texture mix I use to level off the bases and make a nice looking ground base for static grass, rocks, etc.
