I'm all over these Saxon cavalry guys: link

But I'm Old Skool and don't want Saxons on horses in my army. So can I use them for somene else? Do they work as Goths or Vandals? Or early Franks?

What could they be used for?

Wow, those are really nice cavalry. The figure with the vertical armor on his legs could definitely be a Vandal or Goth who came into contact with the Byzantines.
I usually associate the leg banding/wrapping with Saxons. Not sure how prevalent that would be with the Goths/Vandals/etc.
There is a question of when the stirrup came into use and who adopted it. It seems to have been spotty in the Sixth and Seventh Centuries. Eastern Europe picked it up before Western Europe. I think you could go either way for this time period.

Thanks. Do you think the helmets and shields will work for non-Saxons? I can be without stirrups and I guess leg wrapping would be fairly common anyway? Although I have seen pictures of Goths with wide legged trousers not bound.

I think the helmets and shields would work as well. Most groups used round shields at this time. Helmets would have been passed around, so that should be ok.

I would say if you remove the boar crests they could pass for later Merovingian/Carolingian cavalry.

OK thanks. I'm not sure if they are boar crests like the dismounted warriors or if they are small hair crests?

But it sounds like boar crests don't feature on other factions from this time? Only for the Saxons?

Generally speaking, you can buy, paint and use these fellows for a load of different cavalry in the "dark ages" period, including but not limited to Goths, Lombards, British Isles, etc etc etc.

The only thing that will make them a bit more specific is if you give them a certain banner or painting style.

This isn't a time of uniformity, so go ahead and paint them as whatever you like best you can figure out from the [limited] sources, then use them as almost anything [have flags / banners to swap out]. Also, in 18mm, people will be hard pressed to see anything except guys with armor on horses.

Very nice Riders of Rohan as well!
