"On The Beach". film and book

The human race is dying, but at least we know why.

"Down to a Sunless Sea", a great read and dirt cheap on your Kindle

Many another piece of work suggesting the death of humanity. But why is this forum so quiet?

Post some of your most rubbish work, call someone else's images, as showing a wrong button count, or tell us "It never happened".

But why is it so quiet? How much do we miss Tango? Can we not keep this going, or are we totally relying on him? (as I suspect we are)

Look at the stats and who posts and, if you value this forum, please join in and not just passively "view". Arriba! Erwache! ( as they who must not be quoted said) Allez, en avant!

So how exactly are the two books you have listed related to the Vietnam War Message Board under which you have this listed?

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP06 Aug 2023 12:41 p.m. PST

Both are about the human race disappearing.

Look back at the contributors to this VN War forum over the last two weeks and count them.

I admit I have been distracted into contributing to a huge UK project based on Waterloo in 1/72 (groan) for our NAM (which over here is the National Army Museum), but I still look in here most days.

There have been three or four folk posting or responding in about three weeks now. Check it out. Troopwo posted great stuff, with almost no comment.

Hello, is there anyone out there? That was my point. That was the title

If you really want to liven things up, you have to phrase the title just exactly right for the click bait. Let me try a few examples.

"How the Viet Cong Stopped Pattons' Post War Production Tiger Tanks"

"Where the US Air Force Kept Secret Alien Technology in Nakhon Phanom Air Base in Thailand Out of Commie Eyes"

"I Was Vo Nguyen Giaps Secret Lover by Henry Kissinger"

"How The Draft Gave My Hippie Life Meaning"

"Why the M14 was Such a Failure"
(That always get the crowd involved in the US in a big way.)

When in doubt always make reference to tax exemptions, nazis or post a picture of to Giorgio Tsoukalos from Ancient Aliens.

Years ago, TMP was an invaluable resource for the hobby. I could get pretty much any gaming-related question answered. The site has changed. Some have unfortunately passed away, some have left on their own accord.

Post a hobby link or question and you will be fortunate to get a response. Post a topic on politics or policy and you may get a few dozen.

Never gamed Vietnam, although if I did I would use Peter Pig's Men of Company B. I have Viet Minh and French Foreign Legion in 10mm just waiting to be painted. I plan to use Nordic Weasel's excellent 5 Core Company Commander (with some house rules for ambushes) when I do get them painted up.

Most forums seem to be a lot quieter than they used to be.

I blame faceache and twitter and the like…

"On The Beach" Great film. Great cast led by Gregory Peck.
Probably will come true someday.

Was stationed at NKP 74-75 – never saw any secret alien technology. Saw a EC-121D "Connie" (camouflaged) that stayed on the flight line, for about a week. We only had propeller driven aircraft, at this base – no jets or alien craft – probably.

I enjoyed a book called "The Earth Abides." A quiet story about the survivors of a pandemic try and keep civilization and culture going. No great drama or action just the demands of a life without the perks of our civilization.

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP08 Aug 2023 6:17 a.m. PST

We had "Survivors" written by the chap who created Dr Who as a novel (terry nation). Early TV series, which followed, was good for its time. Recent remake was daft and dropped after one season

Just ordered Earth Abides and I see good reviews for Canticle for L too. So, many thanks for the suggestions.

Now back to Vietnam and that War. Good to see new topics again

"Lucifer's Hammer" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, from about 1977 but riveting!! A comet strikes the Earth, civilization is destroyed -- then what? Terrific survivalist tale. Thick book, but chugs right along.

"How much do we miss Tango?"

Hell, he is the most prolific poster on TMP.

Gaming Vietnam for me is too soon. I couldn't do any WWII gaming until the last few years. I consider it disrespectable. I am starting to get over it.

"The Death of Grass" by John Christopher is unexpectedly good, as are "A Wrinkle in the Skin", "The World in Winter" and "The Possessors". Sort of John Wyndham meets J G Ballard.

Why "The Chrysalids" has never been filmed I cannot imagine.

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP21 Aug 2023 7:37 a.m. PST

Read Earth Abides in a single sitting. Unputdownable.

Thanks for all the other suggestions and glad to see the VN War forum is picking up

Personally i don't really contribute in any meaningful way anymore not after getting a comment sniped.
The last time I opened a thread it was taken down for being advertising which it wasn't I was just excited by a new expansion, Im doubtful I'll be opening any new threads any time soon.

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP11 Sep 2023 11:59 a.m. PST

That would be a shame, but thanks for commenting here.

The no advertising rule did stir up much controversy and I, certainly, initially felt it was a mistake. I guess I can now see the point that the forum needs funding and those who pay for ads will soon be hacked off to see others posting for free, as items for "Discussion" (AKA adverts!)

What is needed in "Added Content". Not just "Bloggs et al have released NVA Zombie sappers", but instead "let me show you these figures painted up". That still gets through.

Tango01 Supporting Member of TMP17 Sep 2023 4:31 p.m. PST

For that… you also need more than five threads per day…

Armand

But see the stats for any new posting and just notice the number of visits and how slowly that rises, when compared with even a year ago. I reckon halved for most new topics, unless they are insulting Napoleon or the Confederacy.

I started this posting complaining about lack of responses and new posts on the VN War forum, but now I see that is inevitable if fewer are even reading them.
