In 1/72

"My daughters' abbreviated school schedule has allowed us plenty of time to paint. I started the girls on 1/32 soft plastic figures, which they did enjoy. Now we have moved on (down?) to 1/72 scale. These figures are all from HaT Industries…."

Wow. Those look marvelous.

Nothing "lesser" with these compared to traditional metal.

Well done!

Excellent in every way! Plastic 1/72 figures are getting better and better. To me they are a great alternative for many periods.

Please tell me how to get any type of paint (and I do mean acrylic undercoat spray) to adhere to HaT, in any of their range. Tried diluted PVA glue and detergent. The black just falls off like snow, or maybe nuclear fall out would be a better comparison.

I have thousands of them… always used HUMBROL…

deadhead,

After much trial and error I finally settled on two different methods:

1. Wash figs with detergent. Apply a layer of ModPodge as primer(better than just PVA IMO). Paint figs. Apply a second layer of ModPodge over the paint. Matte varnish the figure.

2. Exact same steps as above, just replace ModPodge with clear Plasti-Dip spray.

Those techniques have been working well for me for awhile now. The key seems to be that the ModPodge or Plasti-Dip seals the paint between two layers of protection, so that even when the figs do bend, the paint, even if it were inclined to flake off, has nowhere to go and remains on the figure.

There are several good posts on the PAINTING board dealing with this subject, and where I learned alot. Good luck.

I have used these HAT figures for my Antietam re fight as in my opinion they are as good as Perry figures, but in 20 mm.

As Mr D alludes to, the problem is getting the paint to stick.

Bayonets and rifle barrels continually flake and I end up having to touch them up after a couple of moves.

I tried the wash and PVA thing without any success.

I also use Humbrol.

When I wrote to Hat about their French Imperial Guard chasseurs I never got a reply.

I later found out that their plastic reacted with enamel paints which explained why it took weeks to dry.

Not very good at all.

Best wishes,

Chris
