It was in the Sea of Japan during the Korean War. A small patrol of US Navy fighter jets from the USS Oriskany spotted 7 contrails approaching, and went to investigate— and then the enemy aircraft— Soviet MiGs— opened fire. What happened next was straight out of Top Gun— thirty years before the movie would ever be made. And the Soviets lost spectacularly.

The battle, though instigated by the Soviets (and solely their fault), was immediately classified to avoid provoking a war, and kept secret for almost 70 years.

I would think there were countless dogfights in the Korean War between US (and other UN) aircraft against aircraft crewed by Soviet pilots, paid for and supported by the Soviet Union, regardless of what convenient insignia had been painted on them.

I agree with Midlander65--it was common for US and UK pilots to hear Soviet language between "North Korean" pilots.
