Samurai (or in this case onna-bugeisha, because female samurai do not exist) carry two swords: katana (approximately two feet long, or – earlier – tachi three feet long) and wakizashi or tsurugi about one foot long. This last sword/knive was used for committing suicide. If an onna-bugeisha did commit suicide she first bound her legs together (your question now answered, Oberlinden), because her "private parts" needed to stay invisible after her death. The figure however possibly is not correct sculpted because a female committed suicide by slitting her throat, while the male samurai cutted open his belly (sometimes assisted by a friend who immedately after that cut off his head to prevent much suffering). |
