When you were in high school (or the equivalent), what sport did you go out for? If several, which was your main sport?

* football
* basketball
* track
etc.

Fencing, college as well. Foil and Saber.

Depression, mostly. Oh, and angst, lots of angst.

steve dubgworth23 Mar 2023 4:39 a.m. PST

we did not get a choice.

winter time it was football (soccer) and rugby

in the summer it was athletics and cricket.

if the weather was really bad we were indoors and had a go at basketball and badminton.

my favourites were rugby and cricket and I kept them up and played for my university and regiment and even into my fifties I still played cricket.

Long story? I was a manager for the Cross Country and Basketball teams. I thought it was a great way for a short, overweight kid with little natural talent to earn a varsity letter. Then one day coach decided it would be a good idea for me to run the practice course with students who came late from student government meetings. That sucked. So I figured if I was going to have to exert myself physically in order to be an athlete, I might as well play. Baseball was my game and I didn't suck. Still short and overweight though.

It probably says a lot about me but our school specified Wednesday afternoons as games afternoons.

I petitioned the school and succeeded in nominating chess and bridge as my games of preference even if they weren't "sports".

So I spent my Wednesday afternoons indoors involved in slower paced and more intellectual activities whilst others ran about outside getting wet and muddy.

My paper route. Family didn't have enough extra money to buy sport equipment. But later I would say Track. I sure learned on to run with a backpack in Vietnam after high school graduation.

Err…. D&D. I wasn't much of a, how do you Americans put it?, A "jock"?, at school. Neither were my friends. I mean we all had to do compulsory PE but outside of that we were friends becuase we were all crap at sports and preferred casting fireballs, slaying dragons and trying to seduce imaginary NPC elf princesses 🤣

american football until my senior year.

Football, baseball and wrestling. Did track when I was younger and no baseball team then.

Thanks

Not a public school "jock" although I did play on my church's basketball team for a couple of years.

Baseball, football, swimming,and wrestling. I also played goalie in hockey, but that was outside with friends on the pond. I can't skate very well…and I was a terrible goalie. Basketball in the park, I was okay for the playground.

My grammar school in UK played rugby in winter and cricket in summer. I first became adept at avoiding the ball in both games so I would not be injured either by its impact or the other boys tackling/jumping on me. Later, I opted to do Art as an examination subject, which meant I could spend the games afternoon indoors, warm and dry, drawing or painting.

Hated sports in high school.

Even now I have absolutely zero interest in sports as an adult. For me, it's all a waste of time, especially watching.

Would much rather read a book, or do something constructive.

Does make it more difficult to relate to other adult men (and sometimes women as well…). At family gatherings, all the men would be talking about sports, conversations I could not, nor have any interest in, participating in.

Slow, skinny and couldn't jump, but loved sports so relegated to church ball.
Jealous of the guys that had fencing available.

American football and track. Not that I was any good at any of it.

I did pick up fencing in college for a bit.

Football (American) offensive guard – very briefly

For those of us in the UK, the offensive guard is the guy the defensive linemen clean their cleats on before going for the quarterback

In university I changed over to football(soccer) – defense; I have a very long, unaimed kick

Football and track and field (javelin).
Football was by far the favorite. As an offensive lineman absolutely loved covering kickoffs and punt returns as it was the only chances we got in the game to tackle someone! Nothing like hitting someone with a full head of stream behind you! Loved Rugby as well – but that was later in life.

jefritrout23 Mar 2023 1:30 p.m. PST

High School and College I ran cross country until I destroyed my foot near the end of my sophomore year. I also played volleyball in high school but since the college didn't have a men's team we formed a volleyball club that played other schools teams. Two years after I left the school a men's team was created.

Played in a basketball league during high school(outside of school) because the coach would only take 1 token white boy on the team and sit him on the bench unless the team was ahead by 30 or more. In that league I played on a team alongside Len Bias, who was the best basketball player that I ever saw.

None, at least as part of the school.

I did play city league soccer (our high schools had no soccer programs, or I might have tried out). I briefly took tae kwan do classes, but never progressed.

At summer camp, however, I was awarded what was then called "The Bowman Brassard" and eventually became an archery instructor as staff. I don't remember how the award was scored, but by the time I was instructor, I was shooting at 60 yards and hitting the yellow significantly, way above what the award counted.

I also did snow skiing and sailing, but neither competitively.
