I saw this today: link Now, I really don't expect another war, but I am interested in knowing the military capacity of the potential belligerents. Don't the British have a significantly smaller navy now? |

Yes the Royal navy is smaller but the islands defences are considerably better now than they were in the last war. There is a military air base with Typhoons stationed there now and the Falkland island defence force are now much better equipped and trained with modern weapons rather than bolt action SMLEs like they were the first time. Also I believe I read that Argentina's armed forces are far less formidable than they were in the last war due to lack of funding. |

I seem to remember hearing that the Argentinians lost one of their destroyers because it "fell over." |

There won't be any Falklands War v2, at least not any time soon. Whilst the UK might have fewer ships than in 1982, the quality is much improved and the specific weaknesses hi-lighted in that conflict have been addressed. There was a small (Royal Marine) infantry garrison in 1982, now there is a a much larger presence, including Typhoons and modern ground based air defence. Meanwhile, Argentina has whatever wasn't shot down or sunk then but with 40 years extra rust. |

Add to that, Argentina no longer has an amphibious assault capability, since its LVPT7s are gone. Damon. |

Argentina has a general election due in October and the economy is even worse than usual. Not surprising to see Kirchner & Co reach for their favourite distraction. RAF Mt Pleasant has been the gamechanger for the Falklands…Britain can now fly reinforcements directly in from the UK, and probably faster than Argentine troops can sail there. Falklands doomsday scenarios usually begin with the notion that the airbase has been destroyed or captured by a crack squad of suicide llamas or somesuch. |

Hope the Kitchner gang lost and we could return to be a normal country… and of course… with the return to the diplomatic conversations with England (as President Macri did)… I praid everyday for that…

Although RN a lot smaller… alongside with RAF and ground defence… Argentina would not stand a chance. Argentine Naval and Air WAS a very serious threat in 82… as we found out… and Army often did their best, under circumstances. Now, No Way! |

Any agression from Argentina would not be met with furtive Sea Kings along the border or single Vulcans with a chain of aerial tankers. It would be sub-launched TLAMs removing air bases, supply depots and Presidential Palaces from the map. And harsh words from the UN. |

The harsh words from the UN would probably be directed towards the British. |
