Background
I just recently came across a fun set of rules (Soldiers of God) while perusing at my FLGS (Viking Hobby – thanks for suggestion Jessica) that I had never heard of before. I tried it and it was a lot of fun.
So it occurred to me there may be others out there that are a lot of fun that I have never heard of before. So with that in mind, here are some parameters and background on what I am looking for:
Time period: Wars of Somerled in 12th century Scotland.
Scale: 28mm. I have 2 armies, each of about 5-6 units of about 24 figures of various types of infantry. I sometimes add one small light cavalry unit.
I am already familiar with Warhammer Ancients & War and Conquest (Both of which I like)
I live in the mountains at least 2 hours from the nearest big city, so solo playability is a must.

So with that in mind, any recommendations?
If you have one, please explain why you like it…

I really like Tactica and Tactica Medieval if you can find a copy. You might need to add a couple of units to each army though so not exactly what you were asking for but a very fun rule set/sets. Your time period straddles Tactica ruleset and Medieval Tactica rules set. They did a supplement that had the Vikings/Normans/Saxons in it and your could easily adapt your slightly later armies to either rule set I think.

For "To the Strongest", you would probably need more units. Depending on how your figures are organised, you might be able to split them to maybe half the size. Grid based, makes Dark Age battles quite interesting as there is no guarantee that your battleline will advance in a coordinated fashion. Definite risk/reward feel.
Equally, you might be able to use "Lion Rampant". gain, smaller units, but you defintely have enough fuigures.

I used the rules from the Cry Havoc board game as my fights tend to be smaller, but I have used them on battles with up to 500 total figures on the tabletop with each figure individually based. With total knights on horseback totaling around 50 and with a dismounted version also available.
I like it as it's fast pace once you know the rules and even with 40 archers you roll that number of dice for hits, and then for damage also so in some cases it might be a wound or an outright kill. This does affect a wounded figure's abilities. The 500-figure game included a storming of the castle but ended abruptly, when the Duke leading the attack was killed outright and the Baron's and their contingents who were aligned with him left the field of battle.

You might consider "Longships".
It is full of revolutionary systems that you may or may not enjoy?

Here is a full description etc

If you want solo gaming in that age look for Great Hall Burning by Two Hour Wargames, now sold by Rebel minis I think.

I recommend To the Strongest for battles. Great set of rules and excellent for solo play. The number of figures per unit is up to you so it is very flexible. For more detailed small battles try Dux Bellorum. It is also very nice and elegant and plays very well solo.

Lion Rampant is simple and fun, with a fair amount of friction (unit's don't always activate each turn) which might work reasonably well for solo play.
