… OVER VIETNAM

"With Top Gun‘s long-awaited sequel now released, it seemed like a good time to dive into the program's real-life roots in America's struggle to win dogfights during the Vietnam War.

Today, America prizes air superiority in its approach to warfare, but there's a growing sentiment among many within the defense apparatus that dogfights, or close quarters air-to-air combat, is a thing of the past. Advanced sensors and highly effective air-to-air weapons that can reach beyond visual ranges suggest air combat will now take place at longer distances than ever, making the need for aerobatic air superiority jets a thing of the past…"

And there is no more need for the bayonet…

Good job Britain re-instated the lance in 1928 (or thereabouts) otherwise the skills of lance-makers would have been lost.

Yeah, you don't need a gun until you need a gun. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Apparently they haven't yet figured out how to take down a balloon with a single missile consistently. Lol…

Just wait until they start arming drones with them…! ;-)

Could you use a bayonet to take down a balloon ? Just lean out and stab …

Look up "Welded Wing".

Look up the the performance reliability statistics of the Falcon A2A missile.

Look up how long it took to implement the "Red Flag" A2A combat training center.

One of the greatest embarrassments inflicted upon US arms in history.

Same old story. Designate a future enemy (Cold War), develop weapons and tactics to fight it, and then get into a war where your advantage is now a disadvantage.

I doubt if the brass and Pentagon saw the reason to change tactics and training in 1965 or for the Army and Marines have to shift their tactics and training. The "Big Show" was going to W Europe and the Fulda Gap and for Navy F-4s shooting down Russian cruise missiles and bombers at long range.

There was no excuse for flying the same Route Package at the same time every day, allowing SAM-2 sites to go active, restricted ROEs, not attacking airfields, and politicians selecting tactics and targets. The VN ports should have been mined and closed at the start of hostilities.
