The Battle of Antietam ( Sharpsburg) 17th September 1862

Timeline 8.45 AM.

After an intense musketry duel, the veterans of Hoods Division have routed the First Brigade of Second Union Division Lt. Colonel Hector Tyndall sending the survivors and the hapless Major General Mansfield crashing into the advancing Second Brigade, causing it to become disorganised.

Meanwhile, the Union First Division, Twelfth Corps, Brigadier General Alpheus S Williams is continuing up the Smoketown Road, it's advance being contested by the reorganised Confederate artillery by the Dunkard church.

The Twelfth Corps artillery is deploying through the East Wood in order to render support.

Contemporaneously, Major General Edwin. V. ‘Bull' Summer has arrived at the head of his mighty Second Corps and is eager for action.

Unfortunately however, General Joseph Hooker commanding the First Corps has just been wounded by a Confederate shell and has passed his command to Brigadier George G. Meade before being removed from the field.

With Mansfield temporarily absent, there is now no co-ordination of command between Second, First and Twelfth Corps.

Major General Thomas J.Jackson now has only six reduced brigades from his initial command of ten although the Divisions of McLaws and Walker are now in position out of sight in the West Wood.

Major General Sumner is determined to deliver the knockout blow to the Army of North Virginia.

Advance!

Thank you again for the kind comments.

I am about to introduce eight hundred troops from the Second Corps for the Nine AM move, but my garage is literally freezing at the moment.

Fingers crossed for some warmer weather.

Best wishes,

Chris
