I found this while wandering around my local library's DVD section. It is a Dutch 2020 film about the fighting in the Dutch East Indies in 1946. The movie was okay(how many movies to you see about the Dutch East Indies?) Young man goes to war, wonders why they are even there, kills people, and has trouble readjusting to civilian life. Part war movie, part character study, part national reckoning, with shades of Apocalypse Now. YouTube link link

I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if the plot was a bit formulaic. I thought it conveyed the feel of "low intensity" operations nicely (I think we only heard a smattering of gunfire in the movie). The character "The Turk" was based on the larger than life Raymond Westerling. On a side note, the efforts to retrieve the machine gun in the river bed would make for an interesting wargaming scenario. |
