Simple question with probably a not very simple answer.

How do you paint realistic blonde hair?

Lots of different ways, just like there are lots of different blondes.

Mostly dark (brown, tan, ochre, etc.) under with light/bright (yellow, off-white, metallic gold, etc.) drybrush. Wash with a medium (khaki, sunflower, etc.)

Sometimes I will do two colors of undercoat or drybrush, generally the lighter shade on top and the other lower. Rarely, I will mix two drybrush color evenly, like pure white to do "highlights". And metallic gold or sliver will come out for a special, specific highlight on some.

Drat, I was hoping to read some good "Dumb Blonde" jokes here.

Dolly Parton was once asked how she felt about dumb blonde jokes. She said she didn't mind them because she knew that really, she wasn't dumb. She said she also knew that she wasn't really blonde…

I use Americana French Vanilla craft paint for blondes.

On elves, I leave it untouched.
On humans, I'll use a brown wash of some sort to "dirty" it up to different degrees. Or I might do a brown base coat and highlight with the French Vanilla.

I had to get my recipe book:
Zandri Dust base
Ushtabi Bone highlight
Skeleton Horde wash
Ushtabi Bone highlights
Pallid Wych Flesh final highlights

Mr Elmo,
What's that in English ?

What's that in English ?

Games Workshop paint names.

Dagwood07 Jan 2023 1:31 p.m. PST

Yeah, I know. They aren't in any form of English that I understand. (Not Welsh, Latin or French either.)

I assume Ushtabis have the same colour bone as the rest of us, but the rest is complete gobbledegook to me !

For the record I have many GW paints, but they change the names more often than I need to replace the, say, dark brown, paint. (but if you wait long enough, they sometimes eventually repeat themselves !). Is Pallid Wych flesh what used to be called Elf Flesh, or perhaps what used to be called "white"?

Next time I am in a GW store, perhaps I'll look at the paint names once again.
