Hi, all, I am trying to learn the BattleSystem 1st edition rules and there is something I am not understanding. What happens if 2 units are not perfectly aligned when they come into contact with each other? According to rule 7.8 on page 11: "A figure must immediately stop its movement when it comes into base-to-base contact with an enemy figure. Other figures in the same unit may continue movement if they are not yet in base-to-base contact with the enemy. Figures may not change direction once any member of the unit has made contact with an enemy figure." So the unit can't change direction but figures in the unit that haven't yet made contact can keep moving forward until they make contact? But won't that change the formation? If the units make contact at a high angle (say 45 degrees) won't that seriously deform the formation as the units that haven't yet made contact keep moving forward? I made a diagram to explain what I'm saying (i.redd.it/r6mu7k1p84b71.png) It's a reddit link since I initially posed this question on the reddit battlesystem subreddit. If my diagram is correct, and the formation becomes deformed because figures kept moving forward to make contact with the enemy, how does the formation re-form? What is the movement cost to get the formation back to a tight formation? Should the formation be considered open after such a deformation? I appreciate any help |

Welcome to TMP! Per the wording of the rules which you quoted, I agree with your diagram's 3rd box. That seems to be how it is worded. It is an acceptable way to handle it, IMO. I play 2e BS rules (since 1992?). The 2e BS rules are different (#2 is how 2e BS rules play it -- very gamey, especially for a Cavalry Charge coming to a complete halt upon contact with the enemy Unit!). I may need to adapt this to my 2e games. Thanks for sharing your post and your diagram! Cheers! |

So I play Battlesystem version….hmm… well its warping into a blend of Battlesystem and AD&D 1st ed. and I am using 15mm miniatures, single based on magnetic movement trays, and my units hop off the the movement trays all the time, and wrap arround if numbers permit. I often, do a little movement tray adjusting, when it makes sense, and prefer to not allow true wrap around until after the first round of combat, but if my units encountered like in your diagram, depending on the situation, and agreement, we would either adjust movement trays or do what your diagram indicated, which ever make logical sense. In a friendly game you can do either or both , but if your playing lets say a Warhammer Tournament, I would imaging there would be much arguing Even at 15mm and large armies, I have been doing removal of minatures, even with games with 7-800 miniatures on the table. I play with my young son, and just finished a game this evening. I lost, my skeletons got clobbered by his small band of (40)foot knights and (20) mounted knights, wearing the equivalent of AD&D field plate armor and the mounted knights riding heavy warhorses in the equivalent of Maximillian plate barding. His army of 60 plus a few clerics against my army of almost 200 skeletons ended in him loosing 4 foot knights, and a cleric, while I dare not count how many skeletons I lost. It was great fun, for both, and I will try to write up and report after I get the pictures so I can post them. Wrap around works, its fun, its logical, and it take a little longer, but single based on washers and magnetic movement trays make it work. With agreeable people play loosy goosy with the rules. |

Another thing you can consider is open vs closed formation, if you use it. If you maneuver to keep the bases to meet flush , its likely in closed formation, but as soon as you doing the wrap around, then open formation. |
