Would any kind soul be able to point me to some detailed information on Leven's advance in the north in '44? I mean before Newcastle fell back south to protect York.

There isn't really a decent, in-depth narrative of events. Closest is Furgol's History of the Covenanting Armies, this does split it by regiment rather than an overview.

It's out of print but you should be able to find a copy of you are patient. I believe Ed is working on a new version.

Edit: Reid's updated Scots Armies volumes give a very broad brush overview; mcRae's How The Scots Won The English Civil War which whilst it focuses on Fraser's dragoons has a general overview of Leven's march south as background.

There were articles many years ago in one of the wargames mags, either WI or MW. Also ECW notes and queries had a few relevant bits. Must say I can't recall issue numbers now

The book The Road to Marston Moor deals with the entire campaign and has alot of information on the manueverings from the initial invasion up to said battle. Very highly recommended.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Folks, I'll look into the sources mentioned. I found this article on the siege of Newcastle in 1644 and it seems there's no shortage of detailed info on it… I guess it's down to reading primary sources if you need a tight close-up of the march south.
