I was reading somewhere (it's been a while and can't find it again) that the English provided the Austrians with a couple rocket sections.

a. is this baloney?

b. if they did, would they be manned by English crews or Austrian specialists?

I want to build one for my 1812-1814 Austrian force, so basically even if it is baloney, that yellow base with chocolate brown rockets is calling me :)

They did have rockets.

Do a search (you may need to look in the archive) at napoleon-series.org. There was a recent thread on rockets. Quite interesting too.

Sorry, I did find that thread after I posted. I shouldn't post on a hair trigger :(

The rocket developments were discussed at some length in Osprey NV72: Austrian Napoleonic Artillery. Sadly, there was not any space to include a diagram of the real Wurstwagen of 1810 used by the crews.

Did the rocket crews wear standard Austrian artillery uniforms or did they have a distinct uniform?

I copied this from a posting on the Napoleon Series. It was posted in German and translated, quite well I might add by Dave Hollins. Just one more reason we're glad he joined us.

"For those unable to read German, here is translation of the uniform:

The Rocket troops were given a dark green tunic, similar to that worn by the General Staff Officers (that is in the Osprey MAA on Specialist Troops for easy ref – DAH) with black collar and cuffs piped with red, brass buttons and on both sides of the collar, the brass burning grenade. Instead of the Corsehut worn by the artillery, they received the fashionable shako with a large grenade badge. Their trousers were likewise dark green."

I hope this helps you.

Dear Forum,

Didn't the British use their rocket batteries as supplements to the regular 6 gun artillery batteries?

Would the Austrians, have deployed their rocket batteries in a similiar fashion?

I wouldn't mind having an "Austrian Rocket" or two, but I think painting 3 or 4 indivual Austrian rocket models, with crews….calling this my 6 or 8 Austrian Rocket battery, would be anywhere close to what may have occurred historically?

Dear Forum,

These Austrian Rocket battery artillerists in shakoes….for the 15mm scale of Napoleonic figures, would French Horse or Foot artillerists unpainted 15mms, be sculpted correct enough to be painted up as these Austrian rocket crewmen?

Thanks,
Wayne
