Hi all i am on the search now for russian militia cavalry, in particular the Novgorod militia cavalry for 1812, but am not really coming up with much of any results online, and perhaps i am usign the wrong terms, or perhaps the sources might just be in russian could anyone help me? Russian militia units have been the hardest to gather exact information on so far it seems |

It's coming up with figures that's the hardest part. |

As far as I can tell, this image has very little to do with reality. Firstly, the militia of the Novgorod province did not have cavalry units at all. Secondly, the artist apparently wanted to portray a Cossack from the militia of the Nizhny Novgorod province (they had square hats), but used a very poor translation from Russian for reconstruction. |

This is what the Nizhny Novgorod militia looked like on foot and on horseback in 1812.
And such a uniform was worn by the Nizhny Novgorod militia in 1813-14. |

To make such a figure, some conversion is required. The cavalryman in the upper figure has a Cossack uniform, but a uhlan headdress. A cavalryman on a foreign campaign of the Russian army – almost completely Uhlan uniform. The difference is only in some easily transformed details. |

thank you for that information and providing a correction to that image i found, as regarding conversion – this will not be too hard for me as a i am making my napoleonic armies out of paper, so i can draw up the figures myself :) |

Ohhhh, now we know the rest of the story. Easy to do then. |

Interesting how the foot-man has red leather musket sling, whereas the mounted-man has black leather carbine sling. Alexandrine Russia must have had tons of lance-armed light cavalry – uhlans, hussars, cossacks, militia, etc PS Don't get the gorods mixed-up:
великий Новгород -> velikiy Novgorod -> Great New City Нижний Новгород -> Nizhny Novgorod -> Lower New City |

@14bore – yes even though i have acquired miniatures this year – alot in the 2mm irregular and project wargaming, and i still would like 6mm and 10mm figures, i still am drawn to continuing with paper creations |

I tend to make my Russian with brick red slings |

I could not quickly find accurate information on Russian weapon belts, but as far as I can tell, in the line infantry they were red, in the light (Jägers) they were black. |
