In an excerpt from a 1969 Proceedings article, a celebrated naval historian explores the command styles of the admirals who led the U.S. Pacific armada during the final offensives against Japan.

Fabulous, love this sort of colour and background to accompany the raw plans and maps and results.

If the United States Naval Academy in the whole of it's one hundred and seventy -seven years of existence had produced no graduates whatsoever, apart from Chester Nimitz and Raymond Spruance, I reckon the American taxpayer would have still got full value for the money spent on it.

I think one of the best proofs of Spruance's abilities and value was demonstrated by Nimitz at the end of the war. Nearly every high-ranking Allied figure in the Pacific was invited to the surrender ceremony on the USS Missouri. But Nimitz ordered Spruance to stay away--far away. In case there was some last moment Japanese treachery that managed to wipe out all those high-ranking people aboard Missouri, Nimitz told Spruance he wanted HIM in command of the fleet.
