Seems the Russians have 24+ heavy bombers near Ukraine, which may portend future ops there: link Sounds like it may be time for Ukraine to conduct a preemptive strike to thwart those plans. |

Maybe someone will be smoking while refuelling the bombers, or the old bombs they're using will spontaneously detonate. Things happen. It's not all special operations. |

Do we think if they get into the air, they will be effective ? I'd think the smart $ would say no … |
Legion 4 | 03 Dec 2022 7:37 p.m. PST |
Well, yes, I would but hopefully the Ukrainian ADA/AAA will attrite them regardless. |
Andrew Walters | 03 Dec 2022 11:32 p.m. PST |
Color me skeptical. The Ukrainians would shoot them all down, the Russians would be embarrassed. They'll keep using missiles and drones. |

Sounds about right … The Russians are trying to do their version of "The Blitz" over the UK in WWII. We know how well that worked … |

They are just busses for the missiles. They won't be going anywhere near Ukrainian airspace. (unless the Russkis are crazy, and thats NEVER happened before…… :) ) |

Looks like someone is now attacking the Russian airbases these have been deployed at: link |

They are just busses for the missiles. They won't be going anywhere near Ukrainian airspace. Yes they have stand-off range, etc. But the Ukraine's ADA/AAA can and has shoot down some of those missiles. Many if the reports are correct. Appears they are doing "The Blitz" more with FA including missile systems. |
Tortorella | 05 Dec 2022 11:47 a.m. PST |
Yes, Ukraine seems to be taking out the majority of missiles, but the ones that get through are bad enough. We are back to the Blitz for the winter. Wonder how Russian ammo is holding up? |
Legion 4 | 05 Dec 2022 8:25 p.m. PST |
In many cases you can't intercept all of the "incoming". Even the Iron Dome and Vulcan Phalanx are not 100%. Just like when we sent Patriot Batteries to Israel when Saddam was firing Scuds at them. Even if Scud was hit the parts, etc. are going to have to fall somewhere. But generally better than having the Scud actually hit it's intended target. Now the ammo question … If Putin wants to continue his winter Blitz he is going to need a whole lot of ammo. |

My recollection was the Patriots had a pretty bad track record when it was all over. |
Thresher01 | 06 Dec 2022 4:09 p.m. PST |
Russians are now resorting to sending in dummy missiles to attack, to degrade the overall effectiveness of the Ukrainian air defense, and to cause them to waste assets on these, which is expensive. Yea, I think 80% – 90% is the best you can possibly hope for, and true numbers may be a bit south of that. |

My recollection was the Patriots had a pretty bad track record when it was all over. It was upgraded since then. They were not designed for anti-missile but anti-aircraft, IIRC. However, I don't remember their track record vs Scuds back then. |
