Chinese aircraft have been intercepting and harassing/attacking Australian maritime patrol aircraft: link In at least one case last Spring, a Chinese fighter conducted a very unsafe maneuver, launching flares near the wingtip of the patrol aircraft and then pulling close in front of it and dumping chaff (small strips of metal) which were sucked into the engine intakes of the plane. This could have caused catastrophic failure of the aircraft's engines, but it was able to safely return to base. link Apparently, Xi and the Chinese leadership have decided that Taran-style attacks by their pilots are a bit too overt, and kill their personnel, so they're resorting to new tactics instead to dissuade others from conducting aerial observations. |
