Foundry. Buy the horde deals. They aren't that pricey that way, about $1.50 USD a figure for foot and about $4 USD a figure for mounted. |

Old Glory is good for your budget, figures are decent, lots to choose from. BTD, GB and Foundry make some of the best quality figures, but they are more expensive. Old Glory is running a sale on their ancients and BTD is as well I believe. |

Old Glory makes some decent Romans I paid $33.00 USD for a large bag of 25mm. I think there are 35 mini's in it. pigmentedminiatures.com

I think Foundry, Perry and Crusader are generally considered to be among the best, but they don't cover all ranges. Old Glory is pretty good and a good deal. Gripping Beast not quite as good as OG. There are other, smaller companies that offer limited ranges of figs as well. |

BTDs infantry typically run $1.50 USD a fig (or did two months ago) from Rise of the West, and their Romans (mostly EIR, I think) are pretty good looking. |

Old glory is having a sale on right now that all their Warhammer ancients models are 40% off for the bags. Their regular guys come in bags of 30 for $29.00 USD USD, but since they are 40% off until the end of October, it is only like $17.60 USD a bag or something like that. Cavalry have 10 models per bag, and Command has 15 models, but they are cheaper than the $29.00 USD per bag. somewhere around $15 USD or 16 less the 40%. I recently bought my alexander the great army this way, and got all the models needed for $250.00 USD or so. Foundry models are nicer looking, but for price right now you can't beat old glory. |

The "best" can be mighty subjective. For Romans I think the following are good: Wargames Foundry (Caesarian, Early Imperial, Later Empire) Gripping Beast (Republican, Caesarian, Later Empire) A&A Miniatures (Mid-Empire) Renegade and Crusader's Republican Romans look good in the pictures. If you want inexpensive, Old Glory is probably your best bet. Dave |

If price is the deciding factor I would recommend Old Glory. They also score highly on variation and completeness of ranges. For building armies they are hard to beat, and being compatible with Foundry (in most cases) this means you can always slip in some of the excellent Foundry stuff later when your budget can afford it. |

Old Glory. Even without the sale going on right now, you always get more for your money, more ranges to choose from, and figures in the ranges. I try and pick up the odd Foundry figure here or there for officer or front rank types, and a bit of variety. But if I can't get any, it doesn't make a lot of difference. Old Glory sculpts are pretty good compared the whole market. And unless you are a "god" when it comes to painting, it's not going to make a lot of difference anyway. |

All ancients ranges are great and beautiful and well-sculpted and worth whatever the manufacturers choose to charge for them. Allen (Newer, positive Allen) |

Like Allen said
..but Old Glory has extended their sale through Fall In (Nov 13th?); and 40% off is a super deal
.and their Romans look very good. Oggie |

Andy, If you want an inexpensive army choose an all cavalry army like the Sassanids (late Persians). You don't need to buy a lot of figures in order to rack up a lot of points. You get terrific Persian cavalry, Mongols, and War elephants. What more could a guy want? You can pickup 5-6 cavalry units and a war elephant for well under $100. USD Stay away from infantry armies as they take many more figures and thus more money. Good luck, Rich |

IF IT'S MONEY, THEN OLD GLORY IS THE ONE FOR YOU |
