Hi I am reading on the history of the battle of Gemauerthof and how the polish irregulars guarding the baggage train ended up helping the russians loot it in the confusion of the battle -what did these polish irregulats look like? I cant find examples of them also – the Nyland dragoons had grey coats in 1705, but what about their shabraques – anyone know , i read that they were red in 1696 |

Hey Georg, My guess is that the Polish irregulars would be dressed like Poles from the late 17th century – different styles of caps, kontusz, pants and boots – either mounted or on foot, it seems that the styles were pretty consistent within the magnate armies. Frankly, most any pancerni would do for mounted, as would some Cossacks. For the foot, I'd use various miniatures ranging from late 17th-century haiduks to foot Cossacks to even Hungarian Rebellion (1700s) by Miniature Figurines (if you're gaming in 15mm). Regarding Nylands dragoons – it seems that schabraques for most of the Finnish-raised units were red with black leather piping. I'll have to look at my sources but that's what I remember. |

Nyland was a cavalry regiment, it was not converted to dragoons until 1721. The uniform that was issued in 1704 is unknown. The preceding uniform worn 1702-1704 was all-grey with both hats and karpus. Shabraques are not mentioned but since they got very cheap uniforms it is possible they did not spend much money on them either. So maybe dark leather? In april 1707 the regiment recieved 163 blue shabraques with a black edge and 327 pairs of withe leather pistol stockings. They also recieved 291 blue coats with blue lining and 168 blue cloaks with yellow lining as well as 120 leather vests. I think it is likely that Nyland's uniforms in 1705 looked more like those issued in 1707 than those from 1702. Both uniforms are in any event shown on this page: link It is in Swedish since I have not yet updated the English version of it with the new information and revised uniform icons. |

The page describing Swedish cavalry uniforms in the GNW is brand new (december 2022) and has never contained info about battle history and commanders, although battle history is covered in an older page ( link ). A year ago I added pages on the Russian army and these contain info on uniforms as well as commanders and battle history. It might be those that you were thinking of. The link to the Swedish uniforms at Fraustadt in my previous post is now defunct since I have moved a lot of the battle files to a common folder. But it is now available in English if you click on this link. And my new page on Swedish cavalry uniforms in the Great Northern War can be found here: link I have also recently added a long article covering the evolution of the Swedish Carolean uniform: link |

In 1701, blue karpus with yellow lining. blue coat with pewter buttons, leather vest and leather breeches. Likely blue shabraques and pistol covers. In 1708/09, hat and blue coat with yellow cuffs and lining. Nyland carried standards made in 1674 and issued in 1676 (one standard was replaced in 1684). This is my interpretation of what they looked like on both sides:
Numbers in each corner represent the year of manufacture. Inside the laurel wreath is the coat of arms of Southern Finland (a blueish knight's helmet with a gold crown and two crossed Swedish flags). The design is very cluttered and the simplified m/1686 design was a great improvement. Unfortunately a m/1686 standard was never issued to the regiment. They carried the 1676 standards until they lost them in the battle of Poltava. The restored Nyland regiment was actually its double regiment, which already had standards, and in 1721 it was converted to a dragoon regiment. |
