I assume tribesmen and Ottomans engaged in some minor skirmishing here and there but, other than that, was there anything significant militarily going on in Bosnia, Croatia, Dalmatia, etc. during the Napoleonic Wars?

What about Marmont's campaigns on the eastern Adriatic coast?

David Manley31 Oct 2022 9:00 a.m. PST

There was Hoste's Adriatic campaign starting in 1807

Despite at lesser degree militarly in May 1810 took place Marshall Marmont's punitive campaign/raid with however 6000 French and Croats soldiers gathered against Ottoman Bosnian of Bihać in what was then called "Turkish Croatia"

don't forget Montenegro and the Russians were very active in this area, even more than the Royal Navy initially, Serbia was even protected two times by a Russian garrison c.1807-1812

a very interesting but neglected theater, and quite exotic although it is still Europe

The Ottoman wars in the Serbian independence movement are also a very fascinating area to explore. The Serbians revolted in 1804 and fought until 1814 when the Turks managed to re-establish control, but the Serbians did finally achieve autonomy in 1815. There is also the Russo-Ottoman war of 1806-12 going on at this time too.

I'm with David, the campaign ran on into 1814 including the siege of Ragusa / Dubrovnik.

I have something from Nafziger on the Russians and Ottomans.

I am not finding much on the Adriatic campaign. It looks like it is mostly naval battles, with a few minor land actions. Is that correct?

Lilian01 Nov 2022 11:26 a.m. PST

concerning Raguse and land actions, the French were already besieged before by Montenegro and Russian troops in 1806

then took place a second campaign in Dalmatia in 1809 with the fifth Coalition and an Austrian attempt to reconquer the area

At the skirmish level, the French also seem to have financed raids by Turks into Austrian Grenz territory so that provides some interesting scope.

Cheers,
