My club buddies want to try some AoS. They're pretty insistent on Warlord's Black Sails rules.
I'm not a fan of Warlord Games- their rules seem childish.
Are there any simple AoS rules that give a good historical flavour?
I have a copy of Post Captain- but there's a fair amount of learning & commitment before the game

I rather like Black Seas and "club buddies" implies you are in the minority.

I never liked being the salmon swimming upstream so go with the flow and enjoying a light fun game. I have to say " a fair amount of learning & commitmen" sounds like no fun.

Black Seas is a fun set. Players not heavily into Age of Sail stuff can have a good game.

I rather like Oak and Iron by Firelock Games. firelockgames.com/oak-iron

Kiss Me Hardy, from TFL, is a great ruleset with some good historical dynamics but far less complexity than Post Captain. I'd recommend giving them a try. I share your view of Warlord Games rules.

For what it's worth, if you fall further in love with the subject, Post Captain is a fantastic set that will give you some fantastic games once you learn the ins and outs. It takes more work, but there's a lot of meat on those bones.

I also have Post Captain. I found a lot of the complexity was in the boarding rules, and this tended to happen very rarely (if at all) once I got into the swing of the sailing & shooting combat I found it quite easy to follow, and worth it for the granularity of the damage results – gives a great narrative. I'd revisit this & see if you can house rule anything that's giving problems.

We're going to give Form Line of Battle a go….. a couple of ships per side…… if there's interest, can then go for Post Captain. FWIW, I don't mind a bit of work in gaming….

For Small Ship actions:

"Away Boarders!"

For Single Ship frigate actions:

"Captains Bold"

For fleet actions – two of us played "The Battle of the Virginia Capes" in better than real time and got a result.

"Admirals"
