"Getting into the hobby of painting miniatures sounds easier than it actually is. Sure – you might have just bought your first Warhammer set or a board game with boringly greyish miniatures. Now it is time to give your miniatures a pretty new look. For me, it was quite difficult to actually get started. Something was always more important to do right in that moment and I could never really find the time to start painting. More and more unpainted miniatures stacked up. I finally sat down and started painting…." Main page

Wow. Another non-starter for beginners. Thinning paints? For a beginner? High-priced miniature-specific, paints, for a beginner? Expand your (singular) army? It all smacks of the GW approach to miniature gaming. How about suggesting craft paints? How about the least expensive automotive primers? What about simple, easy-to-do, easy-to-make washes, using craft paints? What about The Dip Technique, and Magic Wash techniques, to achieve GEtGW quality results with minimal efforts? Noobs need decent results, minimal time, minimal efforts, to achieve success at arm's length. They need encouragement, out of the gate, they need to succeed, first try. Not really for beginners. Sorry. Cheers! |

Craft paints are fine for people that know how to paint as seen here: youtu.be/jugkAadex7s Taylor made golf clubs won't have you golfing like Tiger Woods but there is a good reason you can't DIY furniture like New Yankee Workshop: lack of equipment. A Warhammer store has equipment, is universally available and offers free models and lessons in painting. The "Battle Ready" format will have you painting models that don't look like you suffer from Parkinson's. If you suck at painting, Kolinsky Sable will not help. Paint a few hundred minis and you'll be fine. |

Plus One Mr. Elmo. It;s a pricey hobby to get into, and GW only adds to the expense, but if you follow their tips for beginners using their products you will have a first effort that will make you believe you can do it. Practice, technique, and equipment can come later, but if you're put off right at the get-go you may not want to continue. |

What about The Dip Technique, and Magic Wash techniques, That's a fair point. No point doing painters guides for beginners because beginners can't generally paint worth a damn. Slap it on and get it done quickly techniques like dipping do produce acceptable results – though I wouldn't call it 'miniatures painting' – for those wanting to put something on the table that will not (hopefully) scare your opponent to death. As for craft paints, I'm not convinced. Most hobbies have a high start up cost: It's just the way it is. Good paints are essential, IMHO – suck it up. As Mr. Elmo and Tacitus say, it's a chosen technique, then plenty of practice doing it, that makes you a good painter. I should know, I have been practicing mine for 40+ years and I'm an excellent painter – I was only good at it 30 years ago. |

"As for craft paints, I'm not convinced. Most hobbies have a high start up cost: It's just the way it is. Good paints are essential, IMHO – suck it up." You may not be "convinced", but I have had good results with "Craft" paints, and so have many others. It takes time and patience to learn how to use them and not just "plop them on"… |

I started with a box or two of Airfix, some enamel paints, and toothpicks to paint with (no fine point brushes for me back in the 1970's…! ;-) |

I'm not much of a plopper…. or a beginner. That blending needs work. More gradation between the shadows and highlights. |
