A pretty good summary. I did my master's thesis on the question of whether ACW troops used the parade ground tactics they learned on the actual field of battle. Going through the official records I read hundreds, perhaps thousands of after-action reports and came to the conclusion that yes, they did use the by-the-book tactics throughout the war. Even as late as 1865 there are reports of infantry advancing in columns of divisions (2 companies wide by 5 companies deep) to get close to the enemy and then deploying into lines. Earlier in the war I found hundreds of other examples. And as a Civil War reenactment battalion commander, I learned that using the book tactics makes it vastly easier to keep the men under control. |
