I think wargamers see shieldwalls in far too positive a light. It's likely a bunch of guys huddled together and crouched behind their shields. Rather than a positive formation it's the opposite. They are then reluctant to move (much like troops hiding in cover in later wars) because they are "safe". Their ability to effectively wield their weapons likely much reduced due to their close proximity to each other (see Cannae and Adrianople references here).

There must be some merit in using shield walls, because if they didn't work, the tactic would have been abandoned (pretty sure the word would have gotten around over the centuries. Maybe us "modern folk" just can't fathom it… ;-)

I would suggest the "merit" may have simply been that they stood in the face of the enemy and didn't run away. A rare commodity perhaps?
Solid and immobile has its uses as a rallying point etc. However "someone" has to attack otherwise you don't get a battle…and shieldwalls don't seem to move.
