Ukrainian Pravda: link If you been following this, it means Lyman is pretty much cut off (one road, under Ukrainian fire); Russians apparently still there due to Putin's no-retreat order. The Ukrainian advance has been a slow one, so where are the Russian reinforcements??? |

Next stop- Kreminna!! Capture the hub, then Lysychansk & S'donetsk |

Someone else used to give "No retreat!" orders a lot. And look what happened to him… |

If I understand the Reports, they say Putin said, if they can annex all the terrain, they occupy in the Ukraine the war will be over … Does he really think anyone outside of Russian would go for that ? Sounds like desperation … |

I think it's a NO from Ukraine and a vicarious no from the EU and NATO. Entirely symbolic but after Putin's annexation announcement Ukraine also put in its formal application for NATO membership apparently. |

In the world of realpolitik, Putin has the provinces. Who complains now about the annexation of the West Bank, or Golan Heights, or Tibet for that matter? |

Uesugi, thanks for the video. Did you see how low that helicopter was flying, amazing. |

Gaa'h that was low (though I guess when your opponent at least in theory has capable air defence your choices are limited). Who complains now about the annexation of the West Bank, or Golan Heights, or Tibet for that matter? Quite a lot of people actually. I'm sure there are several UN resolutions regarding the occupied territories at least. The main point is that in all those cases there is a superpower and/or a security council veto protecting those annexations. And the occupied lacked the social, international political and military capital to oust their occupiers. Also, none of those actions resulted in crap all over NATO and the EUs doorstep….! |

'In the world of realpolitik- putin has the provinces' Ooh, I'd be a bit careful making big pronouncements like that just yet. The collaborator leadership in Kharkiv Oblast was saying that it would become russian permanently, just a few weeks ago. Realpolitik, in situations like this, is largely determined by events on the battlefield. Let's see what happens there. |

On BBC, Ukrainian Flag is flying in Lyman. |

Yep, Russians have lost that too. There is also a movie floating around from Lyman where a few pigs are munching on a dead Russian. Not going to provide a link. Probably not what the soldier expected after going to Ukraine, becoming pig food. Hope he is a Chechen. |

In the world of realpolitik, Putin has the provinces. In reality the Ukraine is going to try to take their territory. And I think they will … Realpolitik, in situations like this, is largely determined by events on the battlefield. Let's see what happens there. Yes that is the bottom line. Putin can claim those are his now, but they belong to Ukraine … And again the Russian forces are not doing very in combat with the Ukrainian Force. For a number of reasons, we have discussed here before. |

Unsurprisingly Russia has vetoed the Security Council resolution condemning annexation… but that is clearly not going to have zero effect on the battlefield. Putin's declaration of the annexation has widely been reported in the UK press, left and right, as an unstable rant. 'Taxi driver' was one description and his stability is being questioned in the more serious end of the press. One described him as behaving like he's increasingly believing his own anti-Western rhetoric. Needless to say that if he has been drinking his own KoolAid that is worrying. |

'Taxi Driver' is a brilliant comparison. However, Travis Bickle almost certainly had more genuine cause for grievance than putin and contemporary russia- all of whose problems are self-inflicted. |

Ukrainians are reporting Lyman is in their hands. Russian "No Retreat" order overruled in this case. |

Yes generally Russia & China will vote against many things the US/the West supports. Been that way a very, long time. IMO the Ukrainians will continue to fight on regardless of Russian annexations of Ukrainian lands. That was their plan all along, AFAIK. |

"Who complains now about the annexation of the West Bank, or Golan Heights" A lot of people, but the context is completely different. Those are areas conquered by the defending nation, and now used as buffer areas… |
