An Optio game between mid-Republican Rome and Late Carthage. Rome has superior infantry but Carthage has twice Rome's cavalry. The cavalry fight was a real see-saw affair and it decided the battle.

Terrain is chosen by a pre-battle terrain placement game that wraps up very quickly and is much more fun than consulting charts and throwing a bunch of dice to place terrain pieces. You can't stop progress!

@antiochus: you're welcome!. I played another Optio game last night. Same armies. A real slugfest. The Romans finally went down when their last legion unit was routed. Expect a battle report soon.

I'm hoping that other wargamers will give Optio a try as it really has a very different feel to any other Ancients system. The lack of chance in combat and movement makes timing and tactics all-important, and since it is impossible to calculate in the way one calculates in chess (too many variables) the battles veer backwards and forwards, one side getting an advantage then the other, making it impossible to predict the winner until near the end.

sound tactics definitely help in Optio
