… It Was An Entire Battalion


"In August 1944 Maj. Peter J. Ortiz and five other US Marines parachuted into Europe to help the French Resistance. After one of the Marines was killed and another injured, the remaining four continued their mission. They eventually wound up in a firefight with the Germans, who believed they were fighting an entire battalion of men.

Ortiz was a true hero of the war, with vast combat experience and a long list of medals and awards to his name, including two Navy Crosses, an OBE, and the Légion d'Honneur. He was born in the US in 1912, but in 1932 decided school life was too boring for him, so he joined the French Foreign Legion…"

Nice photo of USMC in Vietnam captioned as WWII.
The rice paddy, M14 rifles and the Blooper as well as CLP in the helmet rubber band and flak vests are a bit of a give away.

US Marines in NW Europe….What command did they belong to?

That is truly bizarre. The photos bear no relation to the text nor captions, indeed.

But interesting to know that some US marines did see action in Europe. I thought just embassy guard, as shore duty, this side of the Pond, but a quick "Google" put me right.

Peter Ortiz Was in the OSS, after the war he was in a lot of movies, at least four John Wayne movies. Hayden Sterling was a US Marine and in the OSS in Europe during the war.; Sterling was the US Air Force Colonel in Dr. Strangelove.
