For the beginning of our campaign we need the supposed size of a full strength prussian line or fusilier batallion. Unfortunately I have conflicting sources, so is a bataillon 800 or 900 men strong? And what about the Landwehr? thanks in advance |

P.H in his booklet Prussian Landwehr and Landsturm 1813 – 15 has numbers for every Landwehr unit, in general about 600 for a battalion but that is a general number. I suspect these filled out at beginning lose soldiers at a good rate. Some Prussian areas are quick to desert, others ,do a job replacements. Landwehr cavalry can be anywhere from 500 down to 300. Line battalions should be 800 but as the campaign went on the went downhill in totals. |

According to David Nash's The Prussian Army: 1808-1815, the full strength of a guard or regular battalion in the 1813-1815 period was 830 for a grenadier, musketeer, or fusilier battalion and 630 for a jager or schutzen battalion. In 1813 some battalions exceeded this strength, especially the jager and schutzen battalions which were deployed as 400-men half battalions. Several line battalions emulated this increase. In August 1813 the largest was the I/Drittes Ostpreussiches Infanterie Regiment with 940 officers and men. And don't forget that many battalions had freiwilligen (volunteer) jager detachments ranging from 39 with the Silesian Schutzen Battalion to 237 with the Guard Jager Battalion. The average was 100 to 150. Although Nash doesn't say, one presumes that the reserve infantry battalions probably had fewer men and the landwehr even fewer. Jim |

As I mentioned I want to give my units the full strength, which is easy for the French. But while von Reisswitz gives the btl 900 muskets, I even get up to 1000 men by Ortenburg (Kriegsstaerke 250 per company). Les uniformes pendant la campagne de cent-jours gives for example the first pommeranian regiment 2326 + 313 Jaeger, and that is during a campaign (!). So I might take 900, but I understand that this is rather unrealistic for the situation in the field. Are there any suggestions for the Landwehr? |

Dogtail, I'm going to guess that the large Pomeranian regiment cited had several battalions. Though that's only a guess, and iirc, Prussians had very large brigades, so I could easily be wrong. |
