Oh my! Anti-war movies make the best war movies! |

This looks much better than the John boy Walton version. The quick view of the tanks was appetizing. |

Wot? The French were involved in WWI? Coo…. (no – I do know that they were but they don't often show up in the movies) |

Wow, a German version of a German classic. Looks good except for reading the subtitles. |

Subtitles suck. I hate having to concentrate on reading those instead of viewing the splendor of artistic movies like this – same goes for the Japanese samurai movies as well. |

Looks good. I am teaching a course on WW1 this semester, and this will be an assignment to watch it. |

Better subtitles than dubbed. |

how about a 'Storm of Steel' movie? |

I'd much rather have the movie dubbed so I can watch and enjoy it, rather than having to concentrate on reading for 1.5 – 3+ hours, and not getting to watch "the big picture" and all of the great scenery in movies like this. |

If all the characters are speaking the same language, then why not just put it in the language of the watcher, dubbed or not. When various characters are speaking different languages, then let them do their own and subtitle with the language of the watchers. I like to watch movies on TV when eating a meal so a pain to have to keep looking up at the subs. But, then, maybe with this movie it will be hard to eat and watch:) I do not recall in the original movie, or in the junk remake, that there were diplomatic talks going on. Is that in the book? Must read it, with subtitles of course. |

I just saw this last night on the TV. I had just read the original book, in English however. This movie seems to be based on a different version of the book. Some of the same things happened but not in the same order. In the book I read there was no long-term negotiations going on in the infamous railway car, and no last ditch assault by the Germans on the French occupying German trenches. Quite a few of the most interesting vignettes in the book didn't appear in this version of the movie. The ground in the trenches were always muddy, but it never seem to rain. The assault by the French in their tanks and flamethrowers was quite exciting. I would recommend people watching the film as an interesting movie about the great war. I would not recommend watching it if you want to bypass reading the book Which is an excellent book about the war as viewed by the narrator. The movie gave me new insights into how to paint figures in the great war at least towards the end. You can barely tell the French from the Germans as they're all covered in mud; the faces are covered in mud. Only the officers are clean. |
