I'm sure this has been discussed but I am starting to paint some 15mm figures for the first phase of the TYW and especially around the time of the Swedish intervention. My reading around has resulted in this observation of types of clothing, kit, armor, weaponry, etc. that would be different on the continent compared with slightly after 1640 in the ECW: TYW- More armor all around no montero caps pikemen wear helmets all of the time Swedish troops have longer coats It seems leggings over stockings are less common early on. More rests for long arms. (I am not sure if muskets lost their rests later or just became less popular relative to the lighter and shorter harquebuss/caliver.) If I'm missing something or just plain off please inform me. |

Look at these Swedes from Khurasan. They are correct.

I've been round this particular roundabout a few times. One of the things from my reading that sticks in my mind, and I can't remember where I read, was that in England when the ECW was underway, jackets are the thing. And I have just remembered the nature of the article I read it in. Remember, Europe was in the early grip of the Little Ice Age, so mainland Europe was significantly colder than the British Isles, which of course has always had a maritime climate, so was a bit warmer at the time. ECW infantry generally wore a waist length jacket. Whereas in Europe, longer coats were the norm because it was colder. If you look at images of European soldiers from about 1650 on, they are all wearing longer coats. And that becomes the norm as uniformity grows, even in Britain. |

The issue is that you are working from 1618 to 1650+ depending when you see either set of wars as starting. No single set of clothes is going to last that long nor all but the best armour (the sort that you never use). We also have changes in fashion over the years and geographically over Europe. Without running into details you can get away with more errors in 15mm or smaller plus most gamers either won't care or are wrong and won't listen. If you want to go down the historical route look out for contemporary prints and paintings but check the dates. If still in doubt put the units in rags. |
