Thw Papal Swiss Guard just doesn't stack up against the others – they were hardly a battle-winning force in a major conflict. Or at least not to my knowledge and the article doesn't cite any martial achievements.
I know little of the Flying Tigers – certainly famous and effective – but what was their impactwere on the course of the war?

To be fair the Swiss generically were highly effective mercenaries for centuries in Europe – for example in French service

A bit disappointed that there is no mention of Carthage or Syracuse, two famous ancient users of mercenaries.

Colour me cynical but I think the Flying Tigers is in there only did to the need to have one American 'thing' in these kind of lists…

Redcurrant28 Aug 2022 12:15 p.m. PST

Swiss mercenaries – yes, Swiss (Papal) Guard – no.

Flying Tigers – 3 squadrons does not make an army. As Royston says – only put in so as to include something for the Americans.

The Flying Tigers were really only in combat as "mercenaries" for a short time, once the USA entered the war the pilots/ground crew were back in the Army of sent home. The Tigers continued on as a fighter group in Burma for the duration of the war.

I think it is a good general list.
