For those who may not have heard, Dave was laid to rest today following a service in the beautiful St Mary's church Nantwich.

Many will remember Dave as something of an enfant terrible of the competition wargames scene in the 1970's and 80's. He was also a writer of popular and innovative rules sets such as Musketeer, Condottiere, and God's Acre. A dark age role playing campaign volume called Heroes became a much sought after prize with copies selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay. Along with Simon Norburn he founded ECW (English Computer wargames) and the online wargames magazine Wargames.co.uk.

Dave was well known on the Birmingham wargames scene, as well as active as a member of Hampdens regiment of the Roundhead Association/English Civil War Society. He was a founder member of the Pike and Shot Society and edited their magazine for a number of years, as well as contributing numerous articles to Slingshot on ancient and medieval subjects.

If you knew Dave it would be very apt to raise a glass in his memory, and to grant strength and best wishes to his family at this difficult time.

Having never met the man, your eulogy made me wish I had. I wish all the best, peace, and healing to his family and you as well. May he rest in peace.

Sad news. My entre set of rules for the Renaissance was Musketeer. Being across the pond I never had a chance to meet him but he sounds like a good guy to game and lift a pint with. My condolences to his family and friends.

Sad news indeed.

I've often almost run a game of Heroes (!),didn't realise it was such a collector's item but it is a very solid looking system.
