There is another thread going that wondered which ancients tourneys in the NE US were the largest, and it got me thinking.

Back in the ancient "before times" HMGS(E) cons always sported quite large WRG Ancients tourneys. These have since been supplanted at HMGS(E) cons by Flames of War and several other smaller tourney events.

I always sort of figured that when the Historicon diaspora happened, the WRG crew took their event elsewhere. I'm beginning to wonder about that now.

Whither WRG?

I suspect the old WRG crowd are playing DBA/DBM and DBMM. DBA 2 was rather large in the Washington area, not sure about DBM or DBMM in the US. IN the UK there are many smaller competitions and i am aware of DBMM competitions in HK and even bangkok.

ADLG is the biggest rules for Ancients tournament gaming in the US although not at the same scale as WRG or DBM at its peak. Warrior is WRG 7th retitled and slightly clarified after NASAMW bought the rights from WRG and is still an active in the tournament scene although lower scale significantly than ADLG. To my knowledge actual WRG rules other than DBA (e.g. DBM/DBMM/DBR) seem to be mostly extinct as far as tournament play goes.

Overall, Ancients as part of the miniatures tournament gaming is down from it's peak size wise.

Ancients is down from it peak size in early 21st century, there are now, however, many more types of game being played in tournaments. I think the total number of such games and players is now much larger than just the ancients were in the early century.

Bobgnar – didn't you used to run the DBA tournements at HMGS events? Midnight Madness, et al?
