Our battalion level rules allows some nations to deploy their integral light companies as skirmishers. I am told I need to use a sabot for them. I currently have the skirmishers either one or two on the same size base (thin metal) as used by the rest of the unit.

It seems to me that the sabot is a movement try. Should the sabot cover the entire frontage of a unit? How many skirmishers do I use per battalion? On a four base battalion with four figs each, should I have one skirmisher for every four figures out front?

Can the people you play with tell you why? It is very dependent on what rules you use. I have never used sabots to represent skirmishers – the skirmish stand is just understood to be a line of skirmishers.

Most rules I know of assume the skirmishers cover the frontage of the unit. And most rules assume a "fixed" number of skirmishers. So the figs are really superfluous. All you need is a marker indicating skirmishers have been deployed. Using the troops in the unit makes sense and looks good.

I apologize for asking the question. I somehow got the idea that this board was for newbies to ask questions.

Depends on the rules of course. I would guess that the sabot/movement tray for skirmishers should cover the front of the battalion. You might need two different sabots, a wider one if the battalion is in line and a shorter one if in attack column.

Up to you and your playing buddies, but I would use maybe 3 skirmishers to cover the line, or 2 to cover the column.

That is a bit harsh OC.

You don't say which rules are being used and there is such a large variation between rule sets that it isn't an easy question to answer definitively. They were giving good advice on how to solve your problem, how could they have done better ?

It is. And we start by asking clarifying questions when we don't understand what you are trying to accomplish. No one was rude or hostile, nor have you answered the questions posed to you.
