"British riflemen in Flanders, 1794?" Topic

Would the British riflemen in Flanders during the 1794 campaign be wearing shakos? I'm having a hard time finding information.

You're going to have to give me a prybar of some sort on this one. Can you name a regiment?

A good question. I thought that the British did not form any rifle units until 1800 so well after the Flanders campaign. The riflemen that were there were from emigre units such as Hompesch's and Lowenstein's chasseurs. As far as I can tell, none had shakos with a preference for Tarletons and crested round hats. You need to identify the units and track down the individual uniforms. The Osprey book on 'Emigre and Foreign Troops in British Service 1793 – 1802' is a good start.

As Artilleryman said, there were no rifle units on the British establishment in 1794; the first being the 5th Bn 60th Royal Americans formed in 1797, recruited in the main from former soldiers of foreign regiments recruited on the continent, men of the 5th 60th did wear tall caps.

According to Haythornthwaite's 'Uniforms of the French Revolutionary Wars' men of the York Rangers, another emigré/foreign regiment, did wear leather caps with an upright frontlet in not dissimilar fashion to the British Light Infantry cap of the 1770s.

Shakos were not issued to line units until 1797. Tricornes/bicornes were the hats for most of the troops with the above exceptions mentioned.
