"Many hobbyists and gamers complain about unfinished projects. They measure success or productivity not solely by the completed projects and games played, but by the number of unfinished projects or unrealized ideas for games. Those figures you painted earlier look great and allow you to have fun, but those piles of minis and terrain for old projects, those are a sign of failure. Those half-finished projects are sitting there judging you."

Yep, too many projects certainly slows us down. I've got at last 6 of them on my table now. I am starting to pick a project and working on it for a couple of weeks straight, instead of bouncing back and forth between things on a daily basis. I also have army projects and skirmish projects. The skirmish projects allow you to occasionally throw a figure or two into the mix to help break things up when you are in the army painting phase.

Good blog post. This is a constant challenge for me. An occasional survey of the painted to see what you've done provides feedback and sometimes shows you only need one or two things to put on a game or play a certain scenario.

Sometimes just walking away from the hobby altogether for a few weeks helps get me back in the mood and realizing there certain times of the year that things just don't get done.

we all know the feeling….

to prevent this I started using a 'rule of 2' for several years now and it has aided my slow painting progress tremendously…

it's simply that on the hobby desk there can only be 2 WIP units at a time. A unit is whatever I want it to be; 12 28mm viking miniatures or 10 bases of ACW with 3 18mm miniatures on each.. whatever. Any painting must be on one of these 2 units and when it's complete it can be swapped out for another. I found that it helps get things done for me.

and the biggest motivator for me to is play some games. Any games really. because that's the most fun part for me, not the painting. even a game of space ship combat will leave me feeling more motivated to paint those Vikings…

good luck.
