I have long wanted to collect this period but was distracted by others. 25/28mm is too big for me, and 6mm and 10mm too small. That seems to leave 1/72, 20mm, 18mm, 15mm and 12mm, but I'm not sure if the Crimean conflict is represented in each of those scales.

From what I can tell 1/72 has a pretty wide range but you have to like the early Strelets sculpting. The cavalry is fine, but getting Russian infantry is a problem as the early sets had 40+ different poses. The ESCI set gives you 4 infantry poses and that's it.

Not sure if anyone does Crimean in pure 20mm.

18mm gives you Eureka which look great but the range is not huge (no Sardinians, limited French Cavalry, limited Turks). It is possible that they can be mixed with Lancashire Games 18mm, but their Russian line march attack have the smooth bore muskets on the right shoulder shoulder, unlike any other sculpt from the period I've seen.

Don't really know much more than that. I guess all ranges will need additions if you really want to climb into it. Any suggestions? What collections have you guys gone for and why?

Irregular does it in 15mm.

Minifigs has a pretty complete range for Crimean War in 15mm.

Many thanks for those suggestions. I read somewhere that these ranges are compatible. The minifigs range is pretty impressive! There are no march attack poses though, but I don't know enough about the period to know if that matters much.

I had also found a range called Rank and File, from Old Glory 15s: link Are these compatible with the true minifigs/irregular 15mm or are they larger and closer to 18mm?

Old Glory will work fine with Minifigs. I own both ranges and have large painted armies. My British are mainly Minifigs while my Russians are mainly Rank and File.

Thanks

John

Thanks for that John Leahy. I would love to see some of your collection if that was possible!

Am I right in guessing that true 15mm includes minifigs, Old Glory and Rank & File, and the larger 18mm are Eureka, Lancashire Games and Irregular?

For me that seems to be the basic choice.

Tumbling Dice do beautiful 20mm Crimean War figures – only problem being the range is limited to British and Russian.

Good point BillyNM. Tumbling Dice is often overlooked and I saw a reference to them over at Bennos figure forum. I like 1/72 plastics a lot because the detail is great and they are so easy to convert, and TD would go nicely with them.

But I wanted to dip into a different scale and sculpting style and I think Eureka is the go for me.

Minifigs has an almost complete range for the Crimean War in its "S" series (20mm).

Thanks Paskal. I've gone with Eureka. The minifigs did look attractive though.
