Imagine spending hours setting up the Valmy scenario on the tabletop. Then spending the next 24 turns firing artillery at each other with little effect. Then going home and answering this poll. TOURCOING! |

Wattignies 1793 Fleurus 1794 Valmy is very much a what if battle in many respects. Principally an artillery duel with little other contact. Better coordination between the Prussian and Austrian armies could have produced an interesting battle |

«Valmy 1792» is the oldest battle honour appearing on the regimental flags of the French Army but only 7 regimental flags of the French Army had Valmy until the bicentennial celebration of the Revolution in 1989 when the French Ministry of Defence took the controversial decision that it will be added to all the regimental flags of the units concerned by this disputed "battle" among Historians today «Valmy 1792» appears on 67 regimental flags… |

nice to see that the first victory of the nation is still so much present, I agree there were more interesting battles in the first coalition wars, an almost endless list. |

actually Valmy was largely ignored then forgotten as a minor event by the First Republic and Empire, that is why even one century after the battle only 7 regiments had such battle honour given that the battle took place one day before the proclamation of the Republic, this timeline allowed to convert Valmy like a mythical posterity under the IIIrd Republic Before 1830, unlike the great victories of Napoleon, the French people did not use to commemorate the Battle of Valmy (20th September 1792). On the contrary, the Battle of Valmy had soon been forgotten. Its memory was too complicated to carry : the battle had been won by Dumouriez the traitor and there were too many rumors going round about it. However, it is that very battle that Louis-Philippe I chose to put in the spotlight when he became king. This report aims to show how Louis-Philippe used the Battle of Valmy and why the republican opposition made it its in the course of the III Republic, shaping it into the myth we know today. |

of course Valmy was ignored, as it is today, Boney wasn't there, the story is more complicated but that encounter decided how the history till 1815 evolved. France won a most decisive psychological victory. Tne French Revolution, the bicentenial was already weakly celebrated in France, Valmy as much as forgotten as well, in contrast to Spotlights of Boney victories and even his bicentenial of his death in 2021. |
