Hi! I realise there is a gap in in rulesets for an era that interests me also – WW2 armored warfare of course :)

I dont really know anything about the rules that are out there but would like to get some that are perhaps for the battalion/division level and which would be suitable for bases with 2 or more armored units on it , ie i am not so much after skirmish level stuff

i cant find much info on Jagdpanzer – are these rules any good?
Spearhead seems to be out of print
Micro WW2 Armor might be right up my alley but still not sure
what about
Rommel?
Command Decision Test of Battle
or Kampfgrupper Commander?

would any of these be what i am after in terms of scale?

If you want multiple models on a base, any of the sets where one base is a platoon, company or battalion will do, but it is a really long list.

There is also a big difference in sets where you run a battalion as opposed to a division, they are two command levels apart.

Of the ones you mention, Command Decision uses platoon elements and is good for battalion up to regiment.

Spearhead also uses platoon elements, but the manouvre units are battalions, so good for regiment up to division.

Rommel uses company sized elements in regimental size formations. Aimed at division or more.

It depends what you are looking for in a game. CD uses order chits, SH uses written orders and target priorities. Rommel has lots of special action cards. Some people like those things, some don't.

thanks for that info – from what you describe Spearhead sounds most like what i want. annoyingly it seems hard to come by and not so cheap are the copies on ebay

Spearhead costs $30 USD from the USA or £31.50 GBP from UK.

I have written summaries of some rule sets here:

Look at Rommel, Fistful of TOWs, Command Decision: Test of Battle, Megablitz

Spearhead is available from On military matters bookstore.

Rommel is brilliant, and allows large battles to be refought. The command post mechanic is excellent, and allows the strengths and weaknesses of each army to be shown. Spearhead is fine, but I always found it a little dry

Dexter Ward30 Jul 2022 12:38 p.m. PST

Oh, and no special action cards in Rommel. The command posts just use dice, no cards

I've never played it, but maybe Blitzkrieg Commander?

I use the Jagdpanzer rules with my GHQ miniatures. I really like them, but they don't seem to have caught on. Since I play solo, I don't care.

I think Spearhead is the best – I have the good fortune to have it

These videos provided an overview of the rules at the scale you are requesting, I assume you mean command a Battalion to a Division, thus you are talking about three specific scales;
Battalion: youtu.be/K8puyPOefo0
Regiment: youtu.be/7Rz2klk5_HE
Division: youtu.be/XsqxziRMG2M

As for which set is the most popular. I have found spearhead tends to have the largest user base, but this does vary by region. From your list Command decision may be in the #2 spot, but I rarely every see a game these days. KISS Rommel has some traction, but that is a different scale to your request, so I assume you mean the Sam Mustafa rules. I have seen some activity, but not a lot. I remember Kampfgrupper Commander got a lot of attention several years ago, but I rarely hear about those rules these days. The GHQ rules are free and are very professional, but again I rarely hear anyone having a games these days. I have not tried Jagdpanzer, but this review may assist. link

Other rules which I have seen some activity around are Combat HQ and mein Panzer.

The WW2 zone is very fragmented so I would either identify what other people in your area are playing, or find a set of rules which you really like and promote it in your area.

pfmodel30 Jul 2022 5:48 p.m. PST

I am not certain how i forgot but Panzer Korps has a lot of activity, probably rivalling Spearhead in terms of popularity.

GeorgBuchner30 Jul 2022 7:05 p.m. PST

thanks for that information – yes i just now grabbed Micro armour on wgv and Blitzkrieg Commander and Kampfgruppe Commander – they are all fairly cheap and Microarmour WW2 is free, after all.

On military matters has it seems the best range of rulesets and good price, though they dont do any international shipping to australia so i would have to use 3rd party forwarding services for that and that can making shipping 50-60 bucks extra

yes i was only thinking of the Mustafa Rommel, i dont know what KISS Rommel is.
fragmented for sure, i guess like napoleonics too

being the obsessive type i think i will still be driven to get Spearhead and Jagdpanzer too eventually, but for now i will try what i got from WGV

"Oh, and no special action cards in Rommel. The command posts just use dice, no cards"

Oops, my mistake. I made all the special command actions into cards as I hate having piles of dice lying all over the table. I've got so used to them that I forgot the standard game uses control charts.

If postage is an issue try for a pdf version of the rules. Some pdf rules are free, these sites contain some free rules.
groups.io/g/BGMR
groups.io/g/Corps-Commander
groups.io/g/Korps-Kommandeur
groups.io/g/LWRS
groups.io/g/Bewegungskrieg
groups.io/g/Schwerpunkt
Both GHQ rules are free on wargamers vault.
FFT3 comes in a PDF form, as do some other rules.
Unfortunately Spearhead and Panzer Korps only comes in book format.

Caliver Books offers a good range of rules and they ship overseas.

Another endorsement for Panzer Korps if you are looking at division level. Rules well supported and tons of supplementary material out there.

GeorgBuchner31 Jul 2022 6:04 p.m. PST

thanks Panzer Korps is not too expensive and its on lulu which has decent postage
