… honor Confederates

"The Army will now have bases named after women and African Americans if Congress and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approve the recommendations offered Tuesday by an independent commission assigned to make the selections.

Congress mandated last year that an appointed Naming Commission come up with potential new names for nine Army installations that now honor Confederate generals from the Civil War…."

Good – long overdue.

I would have liked to see – Fort Audi Murphy (hood), Fort Sherman (benning)……

I would not name anything after Sherman in Georgia or the Carolinas. Somewhere else, perhaps. But then again, the person that suggested Sherman probably did not have his family farm burnt down by Federal troops.

Then someone would be offended that their local base was not No. 1.

Agree mildbill, there is no sense in that, and besides, I want to honor the courage of soldiers in the field instead of generals. It promotes awareness of courage and sacrifice for people serving in these installations. Not much inspiration in a lot of the old names.

Camp Breckinridge, KY, could be renamed Camp Crittenden, then you could have it either way, as there was a General Crittenden on both sides.

In the great scheme of things it really will make no difference. Those who are perpetually offended, will just move on and find something else to be offended about. It will never ever be enough.
