What acrylic flat clear top coat do you prefer?

Rich Bliss27 Jul 2022 12:49 p.m. PST

Liquitex Matte Acrylic medium

Modge Podge Matte.

With both the above, can it be painted or airbrushed on or do mix it with paint?

Perris070727 Jul 2022 1:58 p.m. PST

I can attest to the effectiveness of Vallejo Matt Acrylic Varnish. It dries with absolutely no shine.

Perris070727 Jul 2022 1:59 p.m. PST

Since I don't have an airbrush I paintbrush it on.

Garand27 Jul 2022 2:19 p.m. PST

Tamiya Flat Base mixed with Tamiya glosscote, thinned with lacquer thinner. Still my favorite.

Krylon Matte or Dullcote or Army Painter's matte

Testors Dullcote Clear Finish is still in production. It's a hobby standard. I've been using it since the 1970s. Oh, I see Rusty already mentioned it.

Rich Bliss27 Jul 2022 4:52 p.m. PST

For the Liquitex, I just brush it on without mixing.

I paint the Modge Podge on, I suppose you could mix it with color, never tried it.

Windsor Newton matte varnish -- spray or brush on.

Windsor Newton matte varnish -- spray or brush on.
I had no idea until I read this that there is a brush-on version. I'll have to get some.

I tried the spray and like it as much as Testors Dullcote.

Nnascati mixing mod podge with paint is something I might have to explore now!

I'll add my endorsement for the Winsor & Newton Professional Matt Varnish. Make sure it is the Professional Matt Varnish with the black label. There is a General Purpose Matt with a blue-green label that I don't think is as good.

I switched over from Dullcote a couple of years ago.

I picked up a can of Vallejo Matte spray varnish but haven't tried it yet.

Watered-down Liquitex Matte Acrylic medium

I picked up some mod podge for testing. It seem very thick.

Do you thin it down?

Can it be used (thinned down) in an airbrush?

Other options will be tried when I can get to a store that Carrie's them.

Mod Podge works great – until it gets wet. It's basically a white glue concoction, so it can reabsorb moisture. My area is humid enough that Mod Podge coatings remain sticky all winter long.

You do realize Mod Podge is nothing more than the Grand Daddy of Elmers School Glue. Just the oil and moisture in one's fingertips will reactivate it and wear it away. Humidity will cause it to peel if exposed for a couple of hours or more.

Vagamer63,
I've used Modge Podge for years as a varnish. I live in NJ, so I'm no stranger to humid conditions. I've never had a problem with it being sticky.

+1 for Windsor Newton matte varnish (I have only used the spray cans).

Col Durnford30 Jul 2022 7:15 a.m. PST

Just read the label on mod podge; "cure time 4 weeks". That was followed by "Apply clear acrylic sealer over Mod Podge to eliminate tackiness".

Moving forward with more options.

+5 for KeithRK in regards to W & N Matte Varnish. Just make sure it's the PROFESSIONAL version. I used to swear by Dullcote, but began having mixed results so I tried W & N(spray) after I read about it here…and it's the absolute flattest varnish I have ever seen. Just superb!

Also I use Mod Podge Matte to prime and then seal my soft plastic figures, which stiffens them up a bit as well as trapping the paint between two flexible layers which prevents the paint flaking off when they bend. It works well for that but it comes out very shiny, so I still end up having to use W & N to remove that shine. And I must say I've never experienced any tackiness issues.

I've used Future as the varnish for soft plastic and even latex because it's tough and very flexible, but same problem – it's shiny.

I've made flatter Future mixes with Tamiya Flat Base, but I can't get these flatter than a sort of dull satin without suffering whitening during drying.
