This from the Tin Soldiers of Antwerp Site: tsoa.be/crisis_general.html

"From our chairman

It is with greatest regret that we have to announce that Crisis 2022 will not be happening. Lesser availability of volunteers and the announcement of restrictions already on the table for pandemic measures later in '22 have made it a far too big financial risk for us to carry trough with the known format, hence the cancellation as organizing this can't have us risk our club finances. More updates and some good news to follow later, And who knows a change in UK politics.

Keep safe.

Johan, President of the Tin Soldiers of Antwerp"

So with the announcement of COVID at Historicon and the the pandemic restriction issues for Crisis…things aren't looking as good as they could be.

Gen Con is in two weeks. I'm wondering about how that will fare out.

I volunteered at Historicon (Tuesday – Saturday). Took a COVID test last night. I was negative.

I got a large Starbucks that says Gencon will be unaffected.

Sorry to see this as a harbinger for the future.

Personally, the time has come where this thing needs to be lived with. It isn't going to go away, and we need to adapt to deal with it.
We cannot live in bubbles forever. Basic hygiene, healthy diets and simple precautions around sneezing, coughing, vaccinations and so on are pretty much the norm. Yes we have to be mindful of those who are more vulnerable than others. Even authoritarian countries such as China, with an obedient populace are seeing that trying to maintain zero covid is a non-starter.
I'm speaking as a triple vaxxed, healthy and fit non-smoker who did all the right things but caught it twice (first time nearly killed me, second one just knocked me a bit) and now has long covid which does suck. I have multiple auto-immune disorders as well, but I have no intention of hiding away for the rest of my days…..
I don't like the term but it is apt: find the "new normal".

cheers
Jon

Mini Wanderer;

If you are going to be there, I'll take that bet….

Since the attendance population of Gen-Con is in the tens of thousands, and not only do they intermix at the convention center with each other, dealers and vendors, they also intermix with people downtown, AND those folks that walk through the convention center to get to pre-season games and other events downtown that weekend.
The statistics and percentages say you are wrong.

Let me know if you are going to be at Gen-Con. I'd like one of their large Vanilla Beans please….

Gen Con is sticking with proof of vaccination and universal mask requirements.

Clearly they didn't get the memo (nobody cares). Elmo will not be going.

Nashcon is coming up here in Tennessee. Although cases are up somewhat, the number of cases is considerably down from the peak, as are hospitalizations and deaths. As of right now, the number of cases is on a downward trend since July 4, but obviously that's not a lot of time having passed. Also, cases are dependent on someone actually doing a test which is then reported to the Tennessee State Health department.
Here's the link to the recent Tennessee data as of 7/27/22: PDF link

I am personally now quadruple vaxed based on the advice of three independent doctors. So far I have never tested positive nor had any symptoms, so the risk from me to others is currently minimal.

But let me also say that if you are displaying the symptoms of Covid-19 WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING AT A CON, YOU INCONSIDERATE DUNDERHEAD!?!?!?! (Ah. Good to get that off my chest.)

A little personal responsibility and consideration should go a long way.

+1 Mr Elmo.

This is not so much about covid. This is far more about the results of Brexit ("And who knows a change in UK politics.").
Most of the UK-traders cannot afford anymore to visit the continent…
British: you got finally rid of your desastrous premier, please now come back to us !

I don't think that Covid is going away and we are going to have to learn to cope with it in as safe a way as possible but still live the lives that we want to lead. I'm not sure of anyone else's vision for that but to me it means we start living normally again and those that need to protect themselves more should wear the N95 masks and decide what level of interaction they deem to be safe/necessary. There is no perfect answer for this, but at some point the world has to go on, we cannot stop living. This is just how I feel and I am certain that there are plenty of people that will vehemently disagree.

Porthos,
Think you got it right there, less UK traders attending means less trade stand income and possibly less footfall add into that Covid and I understand the risk to TAS.
I wasnt going this year, combination of clash with Warfare ( the weekend after, to dammed old for that sort of turn around)
and total lack of info from the Goverment ( being kind calling it that…) as to the customs/tax implications of attending overseas Trade shows.

Seeing tens of thousands of people all masked would be something. Kinda weird but something.

Bad Painter02 Aug 2022 3:28 p.m. PST

I agree with Porthos and Leon Adler that Covid was just one of the factors in the decision to cancel the show. My understanding is that the response from UK traders was less than underwhelming. As this would have been the first Post Brexit Crisis show, many traders probably decided to take a wait-and-see approach. Let's face it, high fuel costs and traffic jams at the channel ports don't really give people the urge to pop over to Antwerp for a weekend, no matter how great the show and the beer afterward is. It will be interesting to see if the citizens of the EU take the same attitude towards Salute.
