Yeah I know there are probably hundreds on Youtube, but I was wondering if anyone had some they found particularly helpful. I have some horse armies coming down the pike (Rohan, Mongol, El Cid Spanish) and I would like to up my game a bit.

TIA
Kevin

Try Army Painter speed paints and Citadel Contrast paints for your horses. I have painted dozens in only a few hours using them. They increased my painting output immensely.

One thing I would suggest for both Mongols and El Cid is to look at regional variations. The mix of bays and chestnuts with blazes and socks commonly used by wargamers doesn't represent the typical horses from either area, particularly Mongolia.
Image searches for 'Mongolian horses' and 'Barb horses' (one of the typical Spanish horses) show what I mean.

Techniques vary a lot between scales. My main pointer would be to paint reins etc., do a wash (e.g. Citadel) and then highlight rather than washing at the end.

Perris707 brings forward a great suggestion – No 1 son got me the complete range of Contrast Paints for Christmas (great present) and I have just used them for a Chinese cavalry unit for the Boxer Rebellion – great results and much quicker than before; agree they can really ramp up the output, especially for those of use who don't like painting horses

Contrast paints can't just be sloshed on, though. If you do, they will pool between legs and body, and towards the bottom of the horse, making those places darker. In real horses those places are usually lighter.
