The British mounted the 17 pounder anti-tank gun in the US M10 gun motor carriage to create the Achilles. They also had the 17 pdr in the Sherman tank to create the Sherman VC Firefly. Question 1: The 17 pdr had to be mounted sideways in the Sherman, and loaded by a left-hander. Did the M10 turret have enough room to mount it in normal way? Question 2: Did the British ever use the M36, intended to carry the US 90 mm gun, and did they ever mount the 17 pounder instead? GdeP |

1.) I have no idea how the 17 pdr was mounted in the M10 Achilles, though my impression is that the M10 turret is more spacious than that of M4 Sherman. 2.) To my knowledge: no. M36 was produced in limited numbers, and entered service much later in 1944 than the M10 Achilles. There is also an interesting older discussion on this very topic: TMP link |

I believe the British did get 1 or 2 M36's for evaluation, but that is all. Sorry no source for that. |

Since the 17pdr was a better AT weapon, at least with APCBC and we were familiar with it, why bother rearming with the 90mm gun? The 90mm had good all round performance, and was a bit more accurate at long range, but all in all the two guns are pretty comparable. |

The M10 turret was big enough to mount the gun normally, although it did need various weights on it to balance it. No, the British didn't use the M36, but they did mount the 17pdr in various types of M10 turret (the one with the big counterweight being the best). |

None during the war may have received a few post war for evaluation like they did with some late model Shermans. |

Yes, normal mounting but heavier and bigger duckbill to balance the added length and weight of the 17lber |
