Alright, here's a thread that hopefully won't spark too much controversy. Out of all the regiments in the Prussian army of the Napoleonic Wars, which ones were the best in terms of fighting ability and leadership?

OR, for "fighting ability" do you want the one best able to fight a delaying action in rough terrain, assault a defended village, bombard accurately at half a mile, pursue broken troops or break up enemy cavalry?

I'm punting on this one. It's an army I'm attached to, and not a call I'd be willing to make. But I would suggest you divide the results into 1806-7 and 1813-15. Not the same circumstances, not the same regiments and in a lot of ways not the same army.

On the basis that they pwned the Old Guard at Plancenoit, I would have to say the 18th.

Got me to thinking. I was military or semi-military for a long time--assigned here, attached there. Two units I knew were 100% reliable from the commander down: everyone knew and performed his duty, and you could just proceed on that assumption. They were Special Operations Command (Atlantic) about 1985-86, and the 190th Defense Systems Evaluation Group (Kansas Air National Guard) 1975-79. But there aren't a lot of missions where the high command says "we need a crack unit for this assignment: do we send in the 190th DSEG or SOCLANT?"

I think the 8. Leibregiment was pretty good.

Agree with the 8th Leib Regiment. Strangely never part of the guard. Keep as a line unit.

The Reserve regiments may not have been the best overall, but I would say they deserve a mention.
