… NEARLY 140 YEARS AFTER HE DIED

"Two centuries after famed American soldier and statesman Ulysses S. Grant was born at Point Pleasant, Ohio, he may finally be up for a promotion.

At a time when political divisions have polarized many in America, Democratic and Republican politicians have joined hands in bipartisan legislation to advance Grant's promotion to the rank of general of the armies of the United States. The Ulysses S. Grant Bicentennial Recognition Act, introduced by U.S. senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), passed unanimously in the Senate. The legislation has paved the way for President Joe Biden to raise Grant's rank above that of a five-star general — an honor held thus far only by George Washington and Gen. John J. Pershing…"

Promote him and re-name Fort Bragg to Fort Grant!

Good idea. Grant has been underrated far too long. He won the war and was faithful to the union and the Constitution. The "butcher" image is not correct. He was sensitive to soldiers and their lives but he knew that, to win, he had to hit the enemy's strength and hit it hard. Read his memoirs; an American classic.

While recognition of Grant's achievements is overdue,I see no good reason for this. General of the Armies was created so that Pershing was not out-ranked by the other national commanders. Washington, of course, has always received any new general ranking first so that he is always at the top of the list. Besides, Grant got the ultimate promotion – President of the United States.

Am I the only one who is a bit disturbed by retro- promoting and awarding medals?

No. It is bizarre and the epitome of applying modern standards out of context to a specific period in history.

While I am all for recognizing people who were overlooked in the past for individual acts of bravery, Grant was a president and huge fixture in American life post war. At this point is there any purpose to giving him more honors over, say, some forgotten private who deserves recognition?

Well said!

People do that all of the time these days… at least in this instance they are lifting Grant up instead of trying to tear him down, which is what they usually do..
