Looking for a suggestion for rules for ACW river combat. I've got a few sets (Dawn of Iron and Dahlgren & Columbiad) but they seem pretty simplistic and miss some of the things that seem like they were important for the period. Specifically, I'm surprised that none of the rules cover current, sandbars, or nighttime visibility just to name a few topics. Anyway, a suggestion, or two, of some more detailed rules for the period would be appreciated. |

The Riverine supplement of Dawn of Iron covers currents and all kinds of visible and hidden river navigation hazards. It is an addition to the standard rules. I cannot recall any significant ship to ship engagements that took place at night. Running batteries and blockade running by individual and largely unarmed smugglers, yes, but these could be easily catered for using a special scenario rule about spotting the sparks from stacks etc. |

Thanks Alan! Don't know how I missed the supplement; I'll claim old age and move on. :) I'll download that and give the a look. |

Sail and Steam Navies might fit. I believe all your items are covered by the rules. |

There are 2 night battles I know of without more research. Head of the Passes in October 1861 and the Carondelet passing Island #10 on April 5, 1862. Sail and Steam Navies has rules for night actions, river or tide current, and obstructions. Dave |

Have you looked at the old Ironclad game? link Here is a campaign system that a friend of mine wrote if you are in need of one. link |

"River Wars", by Bob Johnson is a fairly simple set that covers most of what you want. $7.99 USD at Wargames Vault. |

My original "iron and Fire" is a more detailed set of ACW rules than D&C and has been out there for over 25 years, still going strong :) The current edition is published by A&A Game Engineering. |

I was just about to suggest Iron and Fire. Loads of detail but still good fun to play. |

IMHO, while the others all have merit, IRONCLAD is still the best. |
